Overview

Note: Buttons and layout may have changed slightly for improvements in user experience.

Areas are user created containers that organize devices on an automation network. Users can group devices based on geographic location, device type, device protocol, or whatever they want. They are set up so it's easy to locate any device on a user's network.

The Areas View displays all the devices you have in your automation network. These devices are your smart light switches, appliance modules, irrigation controllers, thermostats, pool pump controllers, garage door controllers, etc.

This is where you have access and control over all of these devices from a mobile device (phone or tablet) or a computer with internet connectivity.

In the Areas View you can accomplish the following:
  • Add/Delete a device - Give it a name and an icon that helps you distinguish it from others
  • Set the configurations of your devices (Ex. local on levels, ramp rates, zone timers, X10 addresses, etc..)
  • Add/Delete Areas to organize your devices (Bedroom, Living Room, Kitchen, etc...)
  • Check the status of your devices (See if anything has been left on or check if something didn't turn on that should have)

Layout

  1. Your Areas: This shows all the Areas you have created. When you first create your network, there will be a default Area called My Devices. At first, this will only contain your network coordinator and Messenger but all devices you subsequently add to your network will appear here.

  2. Device Field: This will show all the devices contained in the Area you have selected from Your Areas. Devices are displayed in individual fields that show data or options to control a particular device based on device-type.

  3. General Area Navigation Toolbar: Clicking Icon-Refresh.jpg allows you to refresh all Areas. Icon-Add.jpg allows you to add new areas. Icon-Connection-Manager.jpg takes you to your Connection Manager.

  4. Area Specific Navigation Toolbar: You can see the name of your current active Area as well as the buttons for refreshing the current Area's Devices and adding Devices to the network and/or the current Area.

  5. Areas/Wizards Navigation: You can toggle between your Areas and Wizards.

Devices

If your gateway serves as the central point of your automation network, then your devices are the end points of your system. They are the actual modules that will control you lighting, irrigation, security elements, etc. of your home or building. If you need ideas of devices to include in your system, please visit Smartenit's Product Pages on our website.

This section will detail how to add, control, and remove devices using iSmartenit, whether they are ZigBee, INSTEON, or X10.

How To: Add A Device

You can actually add a device to your gateway's network with iSmartenit through two methods, both of which will be covered here. You have the option to automatically discover a device (ZigBee or INSTEON devices only). You can also manually discover a device (INSTEON, X10, WiFi, and IP devices only). Both options will result in your device appearing in its own display box, with full functionality intact.

Add A Device Using Automatic Discovery

NOTE: This option is only available for ZigBee or INSTEON devices.

Automatic discovery can be accessed through either the Area Specific Toolbar or your Harmony Gateway/ Platinum's Device Page.

How To: Control Devices

Devices will appear inside Display Boxes in the Device Field. Each Device's display box will offer different functionality. There will normally be information about the status of the Device as well as options to control aspects of the Device's status. For example, you can switch loads or Inputs/ Outputs ON/ OFF or get readings from certain sensors.

If you click a Device's Display Box, you will bring up its Detailed Display Box. This gives you more options to manually control a given Device. For example, an irrigation controller's Detailed Display Box will allow you to control individual zones and set programs involving multiple zones. The Detailed Display Box content and functionality will differ from Device to Device.

How To: Remove Devices

Click on the Device you want to Remove from your Network, which takes you to the Device Detail View. This is the view where you can change the Name, Picture etc. Now click on the Pencil icon on the Top Bar, this should pull down a list. To Remove this Device now Click on "Remove from Network".

Areas

Once you have added Devices to your automation network, you can begin to organize them into Areas. Remember, Areas are simply logical containers to help you organize and find devices. You can create Areas using any designation would prefer, like geographic location (Kitchen, Bedroom etc.), device category (Lights, Irrigation etc.), or others. You can put the same device in multiple areas. When you first establish your network, a default Area, called My Devices will appear. Any subsequent Devices you add to your network will show up in its Display Box here.

This section will cover how to create, populate, and remove Areas using iSmartenit.
